Scott Henderson, M.D. Scott Henderson, M.D.
Residency Program Director

Dr. Henderson is a 1984 graduate of the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Medicine. He completed his family medicine residency at the University of Wyoming FP Residency Program at Cheyenne and is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. Dr. Henderson completed a one year faculty development fellowship through the University of Kansas School of Medicine – Wichita and a program director fellowship through the National Institute for Program Director Development. Dr. Henderson has over sixteen years of experience in academic family medicine. He has served in various faculty positions, including program director, at two other programs. Dr. Henderson joined the faculty of the Mercy Family Medicine Residency as program director, in 2003. His professional interests include rural medicine issues and practice management.

Dr. Henderson is married with two sons. His leisure time interests include sports, family activities, and restoring his MG.


Dr. Douglas BossDouglas Boss, M.D.
Assistant Director

Dr. Boss is a 1986 graduate of Rush Medical College in Chicago. He completed his residency at Flower Memorial Hospital outside of Toledo. He is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and a Fellow of the AAFP. After eight years of private practice, Dr. Boss spent ten years teaching at a program in Indiana. He completed a program director fellowship through the National Institute for Program Director Development and was in the inaugural class of the Institute’s advanced fellowship. He is a career-long proceduralist and has research interest in quantifying the benefits of continuity of care.

Dr. Boss is married and has two children. He spends his spare time reading science fiction and on home projects.


David Clark, M.D. David Clark, M.D.
Assistant Director

Dr. Clark graduated from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1977. He completed his family medicine residency at Rockford, Illinois through the University of Illinois College of Medicine - Rockford. After two years with the National Health Service Corps in rural Missouri, he moved to Forest City, Iowa where he was in private practice for 15 years. He joined the faculty in February 1997. Dr. Clark is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. In addition to his faculty responsibilities he serves as co-director of Hospice of North Iowa and also provides palliative care consultative expertise for inpatients at Mercy Medical Center - North Iowa. Dr. Clark completed faculty development education through Duke University.

Dr. Clark is married with four children. Leisure time interests include vocal music, reading, jogging and church activities.


David Hanson, M.D.David Hanson, M.D.
Assistant Director

Dr. Hanson graduated from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in Iowa City, Iowa in 1978 and completed his family medicine residency at Broadlawns Medical Center in Des Moines. He is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. Dr. Hanson was in private practice for seven years and served as a faculty in another residency program for two years before joining the Mercy Family Medicine Residency faculty in 1993. His special areas of medical interest are preventive health care, patient education, and obstetrics. Dr. Hanson completed faculty development education through Duke University.

Dr. Hanson is married with 3 children. During his spare time, he is involved with church activities, flying, reading and skiing.


Jerrold White, M.D.
Jerrold White, M.D.
Assistant Director

Dr. White is a 1987 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Medicine located in Iowa City. He completed a residency in family medicine at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Mason City and is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. Dr. White spent two years splitting time between private practice and teaching before joining the faculty full-time in 1992. He has completed faculty development education through Duke University. His medical interests include preventive medicine and smoking cessation.

Dr. White is married with five children. He enjoys sports, baseball history, music, and bicycling.


John Swegle, Pharm. D. John Swegle Pharm. D.
Clinical Pharmacist

Dr. Swegle graduated from Drake University College of Pharmacy in Des Moines in 1992. He received a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Iowa in 1996 and completed a pharmacy residency in family practice at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He is also certified as a pharmacotherapy specialist by the Board of Pharmaceutical specialities. His medical interests include geriatrics, psychiatry, and patient education.

Dr. Swegle joined the residency faculty in 1997. In addition to his residency responsibilities he serves on the faculty of the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy. He is a past recipient of the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy "Teacher of the Year" award.

Dr. Swegle is married with three children. He enjoys golfing, sports, and outdoor activities


Chuck Taylor, M.A.
Chuck Taylor, M.A.
Behavioral Science Coordinator

Mr. Taylor completed his degree at the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls. His experience in behavioral/psychological disciplines extends over several years and a variety of settings. He joined the faculty in 1986. He is a member of the National Board of Certified Counselors and is licensed as both a mental health counselor and master's level social worker.

Mr. Taylor is married and has two grown sons. He enjoys reading, cooking and off-road biking.


Sharla Wellik
Sharla Wellik - Program Coordinator

Sharla facilitates the residents' training during their three years in Mason City. She has been the residency's coordinator since 1997. She arranges and schedules clinic time and rotations, maintains communication with community physicians’ offices, hospital administrative staff and coordinates other residency educational responsibilities and events. Sharla also coordinates resident recruiting, schedules interviews and makes arrangements for resident applicants.

Away from the office she enjoys spending time with her husband, visiting her three grown children, baking, biking, and gardening.
