Pulmonary Rehabilitation

arm bikeMercy's Pulmonary Rehabilitation program provides cardiovascular exercises for people with lung disease to improve breathing, endurance, and function.

Patients will be evaluated by a physical therapist. Following the initial evaluation, the patient will be seen for one visit with the physical therapist and the Director of Pulmonary Rehabilitation for an exercise test. During this test an Electrocardiogram (not a stress test) will be performed. Upon completing of the evaluation and testing, an individualized exercise program will be designed based on the patient's needs. The patient will participate in one-hour sessions three times each week for a total of 10 weeks.

Mercy's pulmonary rehabilitation program includes six classes to educate patients about their condition. These include:

  • Exercise for life
  • Respiratory therapy education on use of oxygen and inhaled medication
  • Smoking cessation
  • Physiology of lung disease and purpose of pulmonary medications
  • Energy conservation
  • Nutrition

Pulmonary Rehabilitation is appropriate for anyone with chronic lung disease with the following diagnoses: pulmonary hypertension, lung transplant, lung resection, asthmas, emphysema, COPD, or pulmonary fibrosis.

A physician referral is required. A history and physical examination and a cardiac stress test need to be completed within the past six months to make sure the patient is appropriate for the program. Patients interested in participation should inquire with their family physicians.
